How to Add and Subtract Time (Hours and Minutes)
Published 2026-11-03
Time calculator is a high-KD search because people mix two problems: adding durations (this tool) and elapsed clock time (the hours calculator). 1:45:30 plus 0:30:45 is 2:16:15. That is not “quarter to two on a clock.” There is no AM/PM, timezone or midnight wrap.

Open Time Calculator →Our time calculator converts each duration to seconds, adds or subtracts, then normalizes hours:minutes:seconds. Minutes and seconds may exceed 59 on input — they carry. Hours may exceed 24. A longer second duration in subtract mode yields a negative result.
Open the time calculator
The default 1:45:30 + 0:30:45 should read 2:16:15, which is 8,175 seconds or 2.270833 hours. Use the hours calculator if you have start and end clock readings instead.
Seconds are the common unit
Hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds. Add or subtract those totals, then divide back: hours = whole seconds ÷ 3600, remainder minutes, remainder seconds.
seconds = 3600×h + 60×m + s
result = seconds₁ ± seconds₂
Carrying and decimal hours
120 minutes 60 seconds becomes 2:01:00. 1:30:00 is 1.5 hours, never 1.30 hours — timesheets want the decimal from total seconds ÷ 3600.
| Operation | Result |
|---|---|
| 1:45:30 + 0:30:45 | 2:16:15 |
| 2:20:00 + 1:50:00 | 4:10:00 |
| 0:30:45 − 1:45:30 | −1:14:45 |
| 0:120:60 (normalized) | 2:01:00 |
Duration versus clock versus dates
Durations have no date. Clock-to-clock including overnight is the hours calculator. Calendar days are days-between-dates. Adding weeks to a calendar date is the date calculator. “Time calculator” in Google often means this duration tool — that is what we built, and the FAQ says so plainly so you do not enter 9:00 AM as 9 hours 0 minutes by accident unless you really meant a nine-hour span.
- Choose add or subtract.
- Fill hours, minutes and seconds for both durations (use 0 if unused).
- Read h:m:s and the total-hours figure for a timesheet.
A timesheet in decimal hours
Two sessions of 1:45:30 and 0:30:45 total 2:16:15. Total seconds are 8,175. Decimal hours for payroll are 8175 ÷ 3600 = 2.270833 hours, never “2.16 hours” just because the display was 2:16. 1:30:00 is 1.5 hours. If you instead clocked in at 9:00 and out at 17:30, that is elapsed clock time — the hours calculator, which can cross midnight. Adding 14 days to a calendar date is the date calculator. Counting weekdays between invoices is days-between-dates. The time calculator on this site is the duration tool: carry 60s, allow hours past 24, and show a minus when you subtract a longer span from a shorter one (0:30:45 − 1:45:30 = −1:14:45).

Can minutes be 90?
Yes. They carry into hours.
Can the result exceed 24 hours?
Yes. 30:00:00 stays 30 hours.
What does a minus sign mean?
The second duration was longer. The sign applies to the whole result.
Fractional seconds?
This version accepts whole hours, minutes and seconds only.
