How to Calculate a Tip (15%, 18%, 20%)

Published 2026-11-02

Tip calculator searches spike around dinners, delivery and holidays. The math is ordinary percent-of: tip = bill × rate, total = bill + tip. Customs differ by country and by service. In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual sit-down range; many people tip on the post-tax total instead.

Our tip calculator takes the bill, a tip percent and the number of people. It does not look up local norms or add a card-surcharge. A $47.83 bill at 18% is $8.61 of tip and $56.44 total; split three ways that is about $18.81 each before anyone rounds up. That is the whole product — people search “tip calculator” because they do not want to do that at the table.

Open the tip calculator

Enter the bill, choose a percent and set how many people split the total. You will see tip dollars, grand total and each share. Use the percentage calculator if you only need “what is 20% of X.”

The formula

Decide whether the bill you type is before or after sales tax. Either is fine if you are consistent. Splitting is then total ÷ people — this tool does not itemize who ordered the steak.

Tip = bill × (rate ÷ 100)
Total = bill + tip
Per person = total ÷ people

Common US sit-down rates

These assume the same $80 pre-tax bill.

15%$12.00$92.00$46.00
18%$14.40$94.40$47.20
20%$16.00$96.00$48.00
25%$20.00$100.00$50.00

Tax, discounts and delivery

If a discount applied, tip on the food you received unless a coupon says otherwise — house rules vary. Sales tax is not service; some people exclude it, some do not. Delivery apps often collect a fee that is not the driver’s tip. For a sale price plus tax, compute the discount first, then tax, then tip, or enter the receipt total and pick a rate. “Tip calculator” and “20 percent tip” are high-volume because people want the dollars, not a mental 10% doubled — the tip calculator does that split in one screen.

  1. Read the bill you will actually pay.
  2. Pick a percent (15, 18 or 20 are the usual US sit-down set).
  3. Enter party size if you are splitting evenly.
  4. Round up if you prefer whole dollars.
  5. Use the sales-tax calculator if you only have a pre-tax price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 20% mandatory?

No. It is a common US sit-down custom, not a law in most places.

Should I tip on tax?

Either way is used. Pick one and be consistent. This calculator tips on the amount you type.

What about 0%?

Enter 0 if you only want to split a bill with no gratuity.

Does this file a receipt?

No. It is a checkout helper. Card prompts at the terminal can default to different bases.

Is this advice on what you “should” tip?

No. Local custom and service quality are yours to judge.
