About the Grade Calculator

The separate final-exam section estimates the score needed to reach a target course grade. It distinguishes attainable scores from results above 100% and targets already secured even with a zero on the final.

How Is Grade Calculated?

Use the dimensions and definitions below. Calculations use unrounded intermediate values; displayed results are rounded.

Weighted grade = sum of score × weight ÷ sum of weights
Required final = (target − current × (1 − final weight ÷ 100)) ÷ (final weight ÷ 100)

Example

Scores of 90% at weight 20 and 80% at weight 30 give (90 × 20 + 80 × 30) ÷ 50 = 84%.

How to Use the Grade Calculator

  1. Enter each assignment score percentage.
  2. Enter its relative weight percentage.
  3. Add or remove assignment rows.
  4. Read the normalized average and letter grade.
  5. Enter current grade, final weight, and target in the final section.

Grade Calculator Examples

Normalized weights

Scores of 90% at weight 20 and 80% at weight 30 give (90 × 20 + 80 × 30) ÷ 50 = 84%.

Required final

With an 80% current grade, a final worth 20%, and an 84% target, the required final score is (84 − 80 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 100%.

Measurement and input conventions

No. They are normalized by their total, which must be positive.

A starts at 90%, B at 80%, C at 70%, D at 60%, and F is below 60%. Your syllabus may differ.

Using the result responsibly

Assignment scores are restricted to 0–100%. Extra-credit rules and grade curves are not modeled.

Keep adequate precision when transferring results to another calculation. Rounding a displayed result too early can change a later answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Must weights add to 100?

No. They are normalized by their total, which must be positive.

What letter scale is used?

A starts at 90%, B at 80%, C at 70%, D at 60%, and F is below 60%. Your syllabus may differ.

Should my current grade include the final?

No. Enter the average for all work other than the final. Final weight must be its percentage of the whole course.

What does a required score over 100 mean?

The target cannot be reached with a final score capped at 100%, under the entered assumptions.

Can I enter extra credit?

Assignment scores are restricted to 0–100%. Extra-credit rules and grade curves are not modeled.
