Pace Calculator
Calculate running or walking pace from distance and time, or solve for finish time or distance when you know the pace. Switch between miles and kilometers; the other unit and speed in mph and km/h are always shown. Even splits are assumed throughout.

About the Pace Calculator
Pace is time divided by distance. A 3.1-mile run in 24:00 is about 7:45 per mile. The same math works for walks, bike computer checks, and treadmill readouts if you enter the distance the machine used. Solve for pace, finish time, or distance — the other two fields determine the unknown.
This is a converter, not a race predictor or training plan. Hills, wind, and fitness change the pace you can hold. Even splits are assumed: a 3:29:36 marathon at 8:00/mi is the time you get if every mile is exactly eight minutes, not a prediction of what you will run on the day. Minutes and seconds must stay below 60. Choose miles or kilometers to match the course; the other unit and both speeds are always shown.
How the Pace Calculator works
Pick the unknown. The other two quantities determine it. A mile is exactly 1.609344 km.
Pace = time ÷ distance
Time = pace × distance
Distance = time ÷ pace
Example
3 miles in 24:00 is an 8:00/mi pace and 7.5 mph.
How to Use the Pace Calculator
- Choose whether to solve for pace, time, or distance.
- Choose miles or kilometers.
- Fill the known fields. Minutes and seconds must be below 60.
- Read pace, clock time, both distances, and both speeds.
- Ignore treadmill “calories” — they are a different estimate.
Pace Calculator Examples
5K in 25:00
5 km in 25 minutes is 5:00/km, about 8:03/mi, and 12 km/h.
Goal marathon pace
A 8:00/mi pace for 26.2 miles is about 3:29:36.
Unknown distance
If you ran 40 minutes at 10:00/mi, the distance is 4 miles.
How to Calculate Running Pace
Convert the finish time to seconds. Divide by distance. Convert that seconds-per-unit back to minutes:seconds. 24:00 for 3 miles is 1440 ÷ 3 = 480 seconds = 8:00 per mile.
Common road paces
These assume even splits.
| Distance | Time | Pace |
|---|---|---|
| 3 mi | 24:00 | 8:00 / mi |
| 5 km | 25:00 | 5:00 / km |
| 10 km | 50:00 | 5:00 / km |
| 13.1 mi | 2:00:00 | 9:10 / mi |
Miles and kilometers
To convert a per-mile pace to per-kilometer, divide the seconds-per-mile by 1.609344. 8:00/mi is about 4:58/km. Going the other way, multiply seconds-per-kilometer by 1.609344. Enter the unit that matches the course or treadmill so you do not mix a 5.00 km display with a 5.00 mile pace. Speed is just the inverse of pace: 8:00/mi is 7.5 mph. The widget always shows both units so you can check a race that is marked in kilometers against a watch that is set to miles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 5K 3.1 miles?
A 5K is 5 km, about 3.10686 miles. Enter 5 km or 3.10686 mi — do not mix.
Can I enter hours?
Yes. Use the hours field for long events.
Does this use a race-prediction formula?
No. It only converts the numbers you type.
Treadmill km or mi?
Match the unit the deck is using.
Is this medical advice?
No. Ease into speed work with a coach or clinician if you have health limits.
